i’m so sick of 95% of UFC fighters thanking their “lord and saviour jesus christ,” without whom “none of this would be possible.” it’s so typical, so overdone. but it’s weird because i don’t think that i dislike christianity. i actually really like the basic tenet: to treat others as you would like them to treat you, ie to be kind and respectful to everyone. i think that’s a great philosophy but i still get really annoyed with people buying into the mysticism, all the ‘man in the clouds’ bullshit. i think i’d feel better about them if more christians actually just acted like christians all the time, and weren’t so preachy or vocal about the fantasy stuff.
conversely, i’m a real big fan of all the UFC fighters who DON’T thank christ. fighters like luke rockhold, michael bisping, rory macdonald, dustin poirier, faber, cruz, mcgregor, etc. even when i’m not a big fan of them as fighters or even as people, i’m just so fucking relieved when they aren’t drawing crosses on their chests or pointing up and looking at the ceiling at every fight. i even prefer when someone like khabib nurmagomedov talks about being a devout muslim. at least that’s different and somewhat interesting.
but what i really like is when someone talks about NOT being religious, or pokes fun at all the quietly preachy pricks. like this recent quote from bisping:
Listen, I’ll put it like this. If people can walk around — and I don’t mean this in a disrespectful way to religious people — and you believe the son of God came down to earth 2,000 years ago, and he killed himself for our sins, and he can walk on water, and there’s a God up there looking after ourselves, and if you get on your knees and pray to him that things will change…if you can believe that, then you can believe that I can knock the fuck out of Luke Rockhold two weeks from Saturday.
fuck yeah. bisping nailed two birds with one stone there: 1, believing in all that junk is far sillier than believing in a lot of real, possible things that people are often mocked for, and 2, he has a very good chance of beating rockhold and winning the light heavyweight belt.
i believe…in bisping!
