typical thrash metal vocal lines

i grew up on a lot of thrash metal like metallica, anthrax, megadeth, testament, pantera, etc. but i no longer listen to many of those records i used to love because i find most of the songwriting in them really unimaginative, stale, typical. even as a teenager, i recognized that all of those bands rely heavily on some super boring song arrangements, like this typical anthrax one:

intro
main riff
verse
pre-chorus
chorus
main riff
verse
pre-chorus
chorus
bridge/guitar solo
verse
pre-chorus
chorus

and i hate that shit. how many 6-, 7-minute songs did anthrax write that could have been condensed to 2 or 3 minutes? basically their entire catalogue. so boring, so predictable. and all of those bands are guilty of this sort of thing.

and that’s not even my point today. what REALLY bothers me is that all of these bands used the SAME VOCAL MELODIES, OVER AND OVER AGAIN — it involves the root note and minor third, just going back and forth between the two. so if a song is in E minor, the vocal line is something like “G G E G E, E G E E E, G G E G E, E E…” occasionally they might throw in a minor seventh at the end of a phrase. wow, how adventurous.

i don’t understand how professional, lifelong musicians can not see the patterns they are repeating ad nauseum, the water they are treading over and over. don’t they get bored with doing the same thing over and over? don’t they feel embarrassed at having basically written the same song 100 times over? fuck me. i love metal but i can’t listen to that shit. i got sick of it when i was still a kid, but they’ve been happily doing it for 20+ years. wtf is wrong with them?

here’s what got me thinking about this. it’s the latest single by testament but guess what, it sounds like the same fucking song they’ve been playing since the new order or practice what you preach, with the same old goddamned vocal line. chuck billy, try to write a real melody for once in your fucking life. (to be fair, i actually really like the melody in trail of tears from the 1994 album, low. that one is different, original, and suits the song. so he’s done one thing in his career that hasn’t sucked.)

btw, eric peterson and chuck billy are huge loser assholes. every interview i’ve seen and read with them has been supremely disappointing, as have all the stories other people have recounted about interacting them. it’s so sad that grown men who never quite made it big in the metal world can still be such arrogant pricks.
