i had some friends over for breakfast a while back so i bought a few bags of McCain hashbrowns. i glanced at the list of ingredients, expecting to see something like potatoes, oil, salt.
instead, i found this lengthy paragraph:
Potatoes, Vegetable oil [canola and/or soybean and/or cottonseed and/or hydrogenated soybean and/or safflower oil with natural beef (wheat, milk) and vegetable flavours, citric acid], Wheat flour, Rice flour, Corn flour, Modified corn starch, Modified potato starch, Modified tapioca starch, Corn starch, Tapioca dextrin, Potato dextrin, Salt, Onion powder, Glucose solids, Autolyzed yeast, Baking powder, Modified cellulose, Guar gum, Xanthan gum, Sodium phosphate, Dextrose, Colour
it’s not like that list contains anything like nuclear sludge or DDT but i still think it’s crazy that a food most people would assume is basically just potatoes is actually a whole bunch of other stuff. hashbrowns aren’t a healthy choice to start with, and while i’m sure that other stuff makes them tastier it probably also makes them exponentially more unhealthy.
just another reason to make my own hasbrowns.
